Here's How to Puppy-Proof Your Living Space!

Congratulations! You are a pup parent now.

You have stepped into the extremely exciting and somewhat chaotic world of dog ownership. Your house is now your pup’s house too; they are going to spend the majority of their life here. It is your responsibility to take precautionary measures to give him a safe environment in their home.

We have a checklist for puppy-proofing your home. Here’s how you can keep them safe.

Checklist for Puppy-Proofing Your Living Space

Just like toddlers, puppies are extremely curious and energetic beings. You need to be thorough with the puppy-proofing process. It keeps the puppy safe and prevents him from getting into any danger.

Place Food Out of Their Reach

Pups can figure out where all the goodies are stored in no time. Keep food out of their reach, especially human foods, as they are notoriously poisonous for dogs. Even dog food should be placed out of reach to avoid overeating, mess, and ingestion that you can’t supervise.

Always ensure that you have kept toxic foods like chocolates, avocados, grapes, raisins, garlic, onion, and coffee away from your pup’s reach.

Don’t Leave Electrical Cords Open

We repeat - puppies are curious. They might go behind your TV or near a lamp believing the rubber cord is a fun toy. What’s worse is that dogs explore things using their mouths. Therefore, electrical cords can prove to be highly hazardous. Block the electrical cords off with heavy furniture or cover them with cord protectors. It will keep them off-limit to cords even when you are not near them.

Keep Bathrooms and Laundry Areas Closed

Some hazardous items like cleansers, detergents, sodas, vinegar, fabric softeners, bleach, medications, and toothpaste react dangerously if swallowed by your pup.

They can also chew or swallow towels, socks, or other stray clothes. It can cause severe gastrointestinal issues.

Also, keep the toilet lid close to prevent the puppy from falling into it or drink out of the toilet.

Block the Way to Stairs

Always gate the stairs. If your pup falls from a height through the stairs, they may get seriously injured. Make sure all the ways to stairs are closed and blocked off with a pet gate.

Keep the Dustbins Behind Closed Doors

Pups sniff anything and everything that comes into their sight, especially smelly things like decayed food and garbage. Keep the mess and ingestion by blocking their access to the dustbin. You can also purchase a pet-proof can.

Keep Swallow-Worthy Items Away

Items such as batteries, buttons, coins, clips, earrings, and rubber bands must be kept out of your pup’s reach. They can cause problems if chewed or swallowed. If you have craft items and sharp objects such as needles and crayons, do not leave them open or drop them on the floor. Also, keep plastic bags and plastic wraps away as they can cause suffocation.

Keep the Backyard Safe

Fence your yard and pool areas properly. Ensure there are no small gaps or weak spots from where your pup can crawl themselves out. Avoid the growth of poisonous plants like mushrooms and fungus there.

Your one mistake can cost dearly to the life of your beloved dog. Therefore, spend time with your pup and understand what safety measures need to be taken for them.
