FAQs

Vets would recommend a dog coat for certain breeds, ages and health conditions - they can be very beneficial in certain cases. However, this isn’t a blanket recommendation, and it can be an unnecessary purchase if your dog doesn’t need one.

When is a dog coat recommended?

  • For short-haired breeds, like greyhounds or whippets, if it’s particularly cold
  • For short-legged dogs, like dachshunds or corgis, if walking in snow
  • For dogs with medical issues that make it hard to regulate their body temperature
  • For senior dogs who are more susceptible to the cold
  • For dogs who spend extended periods outdoors

Think your dog would benefit from a coat in the winter? Make sure you choose the right size using our handy size chart, which you can find on the relevant product page of the dog coat or dog fleece you choose.

For something that’s designed with your pup’s comfort, warmth, and security in mind (not to mention the fashion), take a look at our range of dog coats and fleeces.

In colder weather and for certain breeds, dog coats can certainly be beneficial for your pup, but they’re not always necessary. If your dog needs protection from the elements for any reason, it could be worth getting one - and it certainly won’t hurt to have one on hand if you’re not sure.

When a dog coat could be beneficial.

  • Certain dogs: if your dog has short hair, short legs, certain medical conditions or is senior, a dog coat could help them regulate their temperature
  • Cold weather: the dogs listed above tend to be more sensitive to the cold, so if the weather’s looking brisk, a coat could be very beneficial for them
  • Wet weather: in rain or snow, a coat can keep the elements off your dog to keep them warm

Long outdoor stints: whether it’s a long walk, a camping trip, or your dog sleeps in a kennel outside, a dog coat is great for when they’ll be outside for an extended time.

If you want to protect your dog from the elements while also keeping them warm, a nylon or polyester outer layer and a cosy inner lining is a great combination. Nylon or canvas are better if you want full waterproof properties, and polyester is great for a water-resistant option.

Considerations when choosing a dog coat.

  • Comfort: make sure the coat is lined with fabric that will be soft on your dog’s skin, so they are happy to wear it for long periods
  • Durability: if your dog is active, choose a coat made from materials that will last, like a good-quality cotton
  • Breathability: to prevent overheating, choose a fabric or design that allows for plenty of airflow

For the best performance, you want your dog’s coat to fit them perfectly. To find the right size for your pup, use our handy size guides, which you can find on the relevant product page of the dog coat or dog fleece you choose.

There are two main measurements you’ll need to find the perfect sized dog coat for your pup: the chest girth and the neck girth. Measure at the widest part of each, and then consult the size charts of wherever the coat you’re eyeing up is from to see which size your dog falls into.

How to get the right measurements.

  • Chest measurement: run your measuring tape just behind your dog’s front legs, going around the widest part of their torso.
  • Neck measurement: run the measuring tape around the lower part of your dog’s neck, just in front of their front legs, as this is where the coat will sit.
  • If they have a lot of fur: don’t pull the tape measure too tight, as you want the coat to fit comfortably around your dog’s fur.

Need to consult a size chart? We’ve got you covered. Once you’ve got your dog’s measurements written down, cross-reference them with the chart of the specific coat you have chosen, these can be found on the relevant product page.
