FAQs

In Wales, shock collars have been illegal since 2010, but they’re still legal in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland - despite the government claiming they’d ban them in England in 2024. Animal welfare groups are still advocating for them to be banned completely.

The arguments against shock collars:

  • They cause pain and stress
  • They may worsen behaviour
  • They’re less effective long-term than positive reinforcement
  • They could be misused or malfunction
  • They could damage your bond with your dog

The Kennel Club, RSPCA, and many more groups and individuals are fighting to ban these collars across the entire UK, instead recommending rewards-based training.

It depends on your dog’s size, activity level and needs, but in general, nylon and neoprene are light-weight, durable and weather resistant. Our own unique material, Billowthane®, has the best of everything: it’s 100% waterproof and easily cleaned, without the drawbacks of leather.

What makes a BullyBillows collar?

Lined with neoprene: Odourless, water-resistant and gentle on the skin, all our collars are lined with neoprene.

Foam for comfort: For extra padding, some of our collars have a lining of foam as well as neoprene - great for the more sensitive pups out there.

Reinforced with nylon: Our materials are the highest-quality, with long-lasting nylon helping your dog’s collar stay strong even with everyday use.

Reflective options: Often out at night? We have collar options using Reflective 3m fabric, keeping you and your dog safe in lower light.

Billowthane®: Our unique material, offering all the benefits of leather without being prone to rot or needing the high maintenance - tear resistant, easily cleaned, and 100% vegan.

Personalised to fit: We offer styles and sizes for any breed, and even print your dog’s name on the collar for that extra personal touch.

Both buckle and clip collars have their place in your dog’s life. Buckle collars are stronger and designed to withstand high impact, so they tend to be better for long-term wear or walks. Clips can be more easily released, so they’re better for puppies or for playing with other dogs.

Buckle Dog Collars Vs Clip Dog Collars

Buckle Collars:

  • Secure Under High Impact
  • Great For Long-Term Wear
  • Secure - Less Likely to Break

Clip Collars

  • Faster Release
  • Good for Short Stints
  • More Adjustable

Whichever style of collar you choose, it’s important to get the perfect size for your dog to keep them safe and comfortable. Use our collar size chart to find out - you can find these on the relevant product page of the collar you choose for your dog!

The two-finger rule for dog collars is a general rule to check if your dog’s collar fits them properly. It should be loose enough to fit two fingers between your dog’s collar and their neck, but not too loose that you can rotate them.

Check your dog’s collar with the two finger rule:

  1. Put your first and middle finger under your dog’s collar.
  2. Room to do it, but still snug around your fingers? The collar fits well.
  3. Have to force your fingers under the collar? It’s too tight.
  4. Plenty of room to rotate your fingers? It’s too loose.

Having the right fit on your dog’s collar is important, as it keeps them safe and comfortable. Too tight, and it could irritate their skin or disrupt their breathing. Too loose and they could easily slip out while you’re on a walk - especially if they pull.

To help you find the perfect collar size for your dog, we’ve put together collar sizing charts for you to use - you can find these on the relevant product page of the collar you choose for your dog!

Benefits of Personalising Dog Collars

Browse dog collars with handles

If you’re looking for a dog collar that meets training and extra control requirements, we recommend looking at collars with handles.

A collar with a handle can add an extra level of control if your dog gets particularly excited or stressed in certain situations and needs to be guided. It is an easy way of ensuring your dog stays near you in busy environments. Of course, we encourage you to keep your dog out of stressful encounters, but we understand that unpredictable moments can occur sometimes when travelling or out on a walk. A dog collar with a handle is a great way to ease any stresses and keep them near.

Our dog collars with handles can also be used for training purposes, allowing you to guide and correct your dog's behaviour gently. For the most popular dog collars with or without handles, see our Combat Collars.
